GROWN
Sourced from two contract vineyards in the Lower Hunter Valley, namely the Somerset (Howard) vineyard in Pokolbin and the old Kyle vineyard in Singleton.
PICKED
There is no doubt that 2008 was a very challenging vintage in the Hunter Valley. The severe wet weather tested the resolve of the winemaker and the patience of the viticulturalist. Verdelho has proved itself, over and over again to be able to withstand wet conditions and by picking a little earlier then normal and some careful winemaking, this variety has proven its suitability to our climatic conditions. The fruit from both of these vineyards was picked by machine in the last week of January.
MADE
After crushing/destemming the grapes were pressed and the resultant juice cold settled. We pay careful attention to the juice, generally only using free run portions. This year we fined the juice and allowed a long cold settling period to achieve the clearest juice possible (without filtration). The vineyards were co-fermented using a combination of yeast stains at moderate temperatures (150-180 C) in stainless steel tanks. The wine was stopped with a small level of residual sugar and aged on yeast lees in tank until bottling.
BOTTLED
March 2008.
APPEARANCE
Very pale straw with green tinges.
AROMA
Very gentle and subdued nose with the characteristic talcum powder and hay aromatics associated with this variety. Honeydew melon and passionfruit notes are also present.
PALATE
The palate is elegant with some fresh grapey characters. Citrus, hay and tropical flavours are all evident in abundance. The natural grape sweetness adds a lovely balance to the lemony fresh acid finish.
CELLARING
Ideally this is a drink now variety, but does have the capacity to age gracefully.
